Rick & Sallie, peas are definitely a cool weather crop. When the weather is hot they dry up and die. Here in Nebraska folks plant there peas early in the year when the soil temperature is still below 50 degrees. By june when the temps are beginning to climb into the 90s the peas are done. Fall is another time when folks here plant peas. About August is when they plant here to have them grow into the cooler temperatures of fall. Personally I don't grow peas because of all the work involved to grow them, shell them and can them when I can just go to the store and for 49 cents buy a can of peas. :0)
