So, the extra area you have is between that fence and concrete step walkway - right? Well, that's a pretty good sized area. You can turn that into a raised garden bed area using the Hugelkulture method (see https://www19.benefits.ml.com/login/login.aspx or the methods) Just go smaller and maybe alittle bit at a time. You'll want to plant items that don't need much tending to, like dwarf fruiting trees or nut trees. Maybe even fruiting bushes like raspberries. I'm not sure what you can grown up there. You'd have to find out what permanent plantings grow in your area first. This type of bed can grow for many years without further fertilizing, etc. But, you'll be better off lining the outsides of the bed with stones or pavers so that the bottom of the fence doesn't rot out. But, educate yourself the best you can 1st on this before applying the method. There is alot of info on it. I made a smaller one in my front yard and its doing well enough for a first effort. You can also plant other stuff under the fruit trees or bushes you decide on. It's work that'll be in progress for awhile. Or, you can just make a nice experimental bed out of the area to see what grows best first for you. Well, anyway good luck!
