Groundbreaker

Location:  Gainesville, FL

Day Job:  Health Administration

The Digs:  Backyard, Community Garden, Containers, Front yard

Crops:  - Basil, Blackberries, Blueberries, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Figs, Loquats, Mint, Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme (currently growing/mature) – Oranges, Tangerines (in-progess/young trees/immature) - Bell Peppers, Cabbage, Carrots, Chile Peppers, Garlic, Jalepeno Peppers, Lavender, Lettuce, Potatoes, Spinach, Squash, Tomatoes, Turnips, Corn, Beans (Transitioning from in-ground to raised beds) - Pumpkins, (will plant this summer) - Apples, Avocados, Black currants, Bok-choy, Grapes, Melons, Peas, Raspberries, Strawberries (plan for near future)

Animals:  - Chickens (2 mature laying hens/Rhode Island Reds/free range; I have fenced off an area for the chickens around my fruit trees; that way they can clean up the fallen fruit and keep the bug population down while keeping out of my smaller produce...) - Bees, Dairy Goat (plan for near future)

Why I'm Getting Dirty:  I am very interested in healthy living and environmental sustainability; I am also very concerned with aesthetics, so my plan is to construct my urban farm in both a visually appealing and efficiently functional manner; Hopefully, I will be able to prove that you can have your aesthetics and eat it too; I will include more photos as the plan progresses...

Wow! What a plethora of crops! I don't think I could stay on top of that many. Voted.

I love the idea of keeping the chickens around the fruit trees!

I love the way you're telling your story through pictures. Thank you for that, and congratulations on being farmer of the day.

I like the sprouting in the coffee filter idea. I will need to give it a try and maybe not use the paper towels.

Hello from St Augustine. Very interested in what you are planting. We want to be able to grow some fruit and berries as well but no luck with finding the right plants. Our tomatoes are doing great though.

I have a question about your seed prep pictures - what are you doing?
