  Windy City, I start most of my seeds indoors around march. Unfortunately, I didn't get any of the heirloom varieties. I was curious about trying some so I purchased a plant from the nursery "Mr. Stripey". All my seed started plants are out in the garden now. I see you grow herbs. They are a great addition to the garden I just wish I had a better way to preserve them. Any suggestions? Thought about bringing them indoors for the winter so I always have fresh herbs to cook with in the winter.

  I am slowly getting the raised beds together, still waiting for one company to send the rest of my seeds. As it turns out, a few of the companies I spoke to have been bogged down with more orders than ever before, so I guess there are a lot of us startng out from seed. In the meantime my living room looks like a grow house.
  
  We finally got the compost bin put together. Living in Chicago I wanted one that was raised off the ground, it cost more than I planned, but it shoud do the job. Loaded all of the winter scraps and last falls leaves.... 100 gallons and it is full already!!
  
  Now on to find an appropriate rain barrel!

  Hey Windy City,
  
  I hope everything is going well for you as we approach Spring. I spent the winter rebuilding my bathroom cabinets and removing a large aluminum awning from the front of the house (put up by the previous owner). I also spent a good bit of time planning the layout for my raised beds. I'm going to try to grow from seeds indoors. We'll see how it works out.
  
  While the rest of the Country was getting record snow, we got a few weeks of steady cold rain. Things were pretty soggy for a while. The last few days have been beautiful. Pollen is starting to cover everything, but it's bringing new growth. The azaleas and dogwoods are starting to bloom. My fig and loquat trees have new leaf buds, and my orange tree is starting to blossom. All of the live oaks in the area will drop and regrow their leaves in the next few weeks. It makes an ungodly mess, but everything is beautiful afterwards. I will wait until the March mess is cleaned up before I set up my new beds. I'm really looking forward to this years planting season!
