  Checked out your blog and I like what you're doing so I gave you a vote! I saw your directions for canning tomatoes. Last summer, when tomatoes were really plentiful, I washed some, cut out any tough cores, and then froze them whole (individually on a tray and then throw them in a bag). When you take them out of the freezer, and briefly run them under water, the skins just slip off, and they're ready to use from frozen. It's a pretty quick and painless process.

  Hi Lame Raven. I think I may have met Jennifer at a fair here. She showed me some beautiful birds. We may look into it next year, but we'll need little guys. Probably bantams. We only have 1,000 square feet, and it's jam packed with veggies.

  You're in Oak Park? You are very lucky! You've got one of the only Urban Chicken Consultants in the entire nation living right under your noses. Jennifer Murtoff can help you add chickens to your lifestock/gardening plan. you should look into that.

  Congratulations on FOTD! :)
  The potato is a pesticide? that reminds me of that movie called "Corn" that came out a few years ago. In the movie some genetically modified corn caused some other unknown daughter plant to grow and the sheep on the farm next door were eating it. Any pregnant woman who ate the contaminated sheep lost her baby. It was a scary movie. Genetically modified food is scary in real life.

  DesertOasis: This is a photo of the Squash Blossoms (I'm the "baby"). We just organized last year after taking a "Menu of the Future" class. Have you heard of it? That's how I first learned of the evils of Monsanto. I read Michael Pollan's "The Potato" and freaked out that Monsanto's "New Leaf" potato, genetically modified to produce it's own pesticide, is regulated not by the FDA, but by EPA, because it is considered an insecticide, not a food. That did it for me!
