Neighbors Think I'm Crazy!

Location:  Cicero, IL

Day Job:  Self-Employed and Housewife

The Digs:  Backyard

Crops:  Basil, Bell Peppers, Blueberries, Cabbage, Chile Peppers, Collards, Grapes, Jalepeno Peppers, Lettuce, Mint, Peaches, Squash, Thyme, Tomatoes, Eggplant, Lemon Balm

Animals:  Cats, Dogs

Why I'm Getting Dirty:  My husband is a chiropractor and we have always been interested in natural health and that has progressed to an interest in having more control of our food and environment. I come from a long line, on both sides, of farmers. I want chickens so bad but the town would come and take them in a second. My neighbors already think I'm weird - we garden, compost, rain barrel, hang our laundry to dry, etc.

Don't give the neighbors any reason to NOT think you're crazy. They leave you alone that way.

I hear you on the neighbors thinking you are weird. We deal with that all the time. We are starting to notice that we are becoming less "weird" as the recession keeps going.

I posted progress pictures... ...my Summer labors... ...chicken yard with log-cabin style chicken coop... ...used rounded garden timbers for body and recycled playhouse roof for roof/lid... ...rain shelter on side with old mimosa limbs for perches... ...chicken yard built around fruit trees... ...fence edged with yellow lantana...

You're the first I've seen to mention hanging out your laundry to dry. We do that here. It started when the dryer broke and I was too cheap to pay to have it fixed. Now, we like the smell and texture of line-dried clothes, not to mention the savings in natural gas and time. Congrats on being farmer of the day.

For being weird, you sure are in great company :-)
I had to fight to get my chickens and now I'm going to fight the crazy yearly permit to keep them ($100). I think if you really want them, you'll find a way!

Congrats on being farmer of the day. You just keep on being weird with the rest of us. I keep my neighbors wondering what's up quite often.
