  My chickens don't really try to pick the fruit of the trees, but they do a great job of cleaning up any fallen fruit.
  
  Unfortunately, they like to stick their heads through the lattice and pick apart my lantana. I have to keep my little dogs on patrol to avoid plant casualties... : )

  Hey turtledawn--Yeah, my bird netting worked real well. The birds around here are crazy! So while I realize that birds can offer some benefits to a garden, I don't think that would have been the case here. I've only lived here for one summer season so far, but the birds completely RAVAGED my cherry tree (that I had only found out was a cherry tree a few weeks earlier when I inspected some unusually small "apples!")within a week of harvest. This year, I'm going to rig a pole with netting to cover the cherries too!

  Turtledawn, the patio and arbor did turn out really well. I'm still figuring out a way to cover the arbor with plant material to look like a living arbor. The issue is shade. In the summer the arbor is in the shade for the entire day. It makes sitting on the patio nice but growing plants very limited. I have some ideas for this year.

  I used bamboo for the trellises, with string laced between the cross pieces. They worked well for beans, but the cucumbers caused them to lean. I used cages for my tomatoes

  Good morning, thanks for the well-wishes! City Girl, I used the framework to support strings for tomatoes, melons, and peas. The raccoons got to the melons before I did, but it worked great for the peas and well enough for the tomatoes.
  
  Dave, I've toyed around with doing fish, but my husband pointed out the raccoons would probably get those, too. Good luck with your project - water features are so nice anyway, and when you can make them food sources too they're even better.
