Why I'm Getting Dirty: Project: Rendering lard... success. Next project - chickens!! I love being able to garden, can, dehydrate and freeze bounties. I am working toward being more self-sufficient.

Thanks for the compliments on my page Shellie. I agree that saving seeds is fun. Two years in a row, I've grown an heirloom golden bean. I've never planted enough to reap enough for what the bean is intended for, which is baked beans. Last year, I threw what I got in with some other beans and they got completely lost. : ( This year, I'm going to take what I got, and plant them in the garden next spring to see if I can make them multiply enough to finally have enough for baked beans. That's the ultimate, wouldn't you say? Not only planting from seed but planting from your own seed!

Thanks, Jenna. There are lots of great resources for seed savers. It's really quite easy. I choose to use heirloom varieties. It is quite cool, I think, getting "presents" from the garden bounties that can be returned to the ground in the spring! Stick with it. It's worth it!

Congratulations on farmer of the day! I am planning to save seeds as well, but I am extremely new to gardening so I don't know if it will go well.

Ooohhh....saving seeds? I haven't tried saving seeds yet but have the heirloom thing down pat. You'll have to share your how-to's. Beautiful photos!

I am trying heirloom seeds this year too! Your black kitty looks just like one of mine, even the white patch on it's belly! :)
