The Digs: Backyard, Containers, Front yard
Crops: My husband was gracious enough to clear out a small section of our already small back yard for some raised beds. My vegetables vary and in 2012 I'm adding an apothecary garden along my front walk. My faves to grow are heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, tomatillo, fresh herbs, as well as sunflowers for the birds.
Animals: Cats, Chickens, Dogs, Ducks, Because of our small, urban back yard I only have 2 hens 2 rouen hens, and 2 pheasants on top of the 3 small dogs, 2 cats and 3 large tub of red wigglers for vermicomposting.
My horse lives w/my folk's who's really just a great big dog per my dad. I miss my 5 acres, goats, turkeys, pigs and donkey, especially the space but I am very grateful for what I do have. I have recently added a pond (galvanized water feature) w/tadpoles, snails, goldfish and aquatic plants to the lot.
Why I'm Getting Dirty: Because I really do enjoy the way I feel when I collect eggs, even if there are only 2 a day. Being able to can my veggies before they go bad and having my family say "mmmmmmmm" when we sit down to home grown meals is a rewarding feeling. There's a sense of a job well done at the end of the day.
