To see the wild burros and wild horses out on the desert is great, a site that everyone should see.

Its wonderful that wild burros are still loved in some parts of America. Texans have turned their backs on the special values of wild burros in Texan and US history.

They've deemed them "exotic" and "invasive" and they are the subject of an extermination plan. Texas Parks and Wildlife is shooting them on sight and claim that's the only resort because one rescue operation failed.

Since the burros move freely throughout the region even if a major rescue pulls every one out today, more will enter the state land to be shot. The feds protect them as appropriate under the Wild and Free-Roaming Burro Act, but on the state lands they are blown away with no effort of any kind to capture and adopt them out.

If you want there's a petition against this terrible wasting of these special animals that unlike other wildlife have the capacity to mean so much in an adoptive home.

As a long-time resident of Las Vegas and as an avid hiker in the Red Rock area, I can agree with you that seeing these examples of living history is at once exciting and interesting.

Yes, those here at Red Rock are 'relatively' tame and will come looking for a hand-out. Every year somebody gets hurt because they think these wild animals are 'tame.' They are not. They just aren't afraid of humans and know that stupid humans will give them sandwiches and potato chips and other non-natural fodder.

Every year people get bit, stepped on, kicked and head-butted because they didn't leave them alone.

My recommendation is to enjoy seeing them, don't feed them and keep a respectable distance between you and them, especially if there are young ones around.
