Comments On - Natural Mosquito Control

I like Deb's (from Lebanon, CT) cure better! But I have two concerns. One, I was told the goldfish around my way cost about $3-$4 each. Two, I don't have a vernal pool to put them in when they get to be 3". BTW Deb, how big are the goldfish when you get them? And, how long does it take for them to grow to 3"? Thank you.

Sounds great. However even organic dunks can kill other creatures like tadpoles and fish. Be careful.

I keep blue plastic 55 gallon drums under all of my rainspouts. My solution to the mosquito problem id GOLDFISH! I keep 2 or 3 small Comets(the feeder fish from the pet store, about 20 cents each) in each barrel. They take care of all the larva and I have watched them jump after the adult, too. I am amazed that they almost all overwinter; frozen solid in the barrels, ready to work in the spring. Once they grow to 3" or so, they get a new life in my vernal pool. The added bonus is feeding them any grubs or other nasties I find while pulling weeds. They get quite friendly when they see me coming with a treat and will snatch a grub from my fingers. Can't get much more green than THAT.
