Leachables can leach without hot water, though to a lesser degree. It's difficult to say how much damage that amount of synthetic chemical would or would not have over time, but if you can find a sturdier bottle, why not?

If you're putting boiling-hot water into the bucket, yes, there's a great chance of BPAs leaking into the soil. According to "Scientific American," there are many other estrogen-mimicking chemicals we consume every day that cause just as bad of damage. Just make sure you're pots don't get hot water.

What about the plastic leaching into the soil and then into the veggies? Aren't those types of plastic bottles and jugs not reusable? It seems practical, but I would only dare to grow flowers in these--not food for my toddler.
