We too have hard and poor soil.
We started with containers, and they got bigger---55 gallon barrels cut in half like whiskey barrels are cut now. My husband will build 3---4'x4' waist high planter boxes for this next year. The soil is so much easier to manage in containers.
Being young and strong will help you be able to scour the neighborhoods for lumber and containers.
Happy hunting and growing.
